Travelling about Britain, one sometimes has the feeling that whole country has been landscaped by a titanic Capability Brown. The checkerboard of fields that spreads from the fringe of southern cliffs and streches away in all directions has an inventive pattern of shapes that change with the contours. The pattern is punctuated by the dark patch of copse, or broken by the arabesques of rivers gleaming between tree-crowded banks. For contrast, there are bare areas of moorland and heath, for drama an escarpment or a sudden hill crowned with woods, for surprise a secret gorge, or a lake buried among hills.-
